Get Paid for Doing Well in High School

The citizens of South Carolina have decided to pay students for their high school performance. As is the case in most situations, the best performance earns the most money. There are four levels of pay available. The money you earn will be paid directly to your choice of two or four-year college located in South Carolina.

Level 1: Up to $29,200 toward four-year bachelor’s degree (Palmetto Fellows Scholarship) (some STEM majors may qualify for up to $36,700)

HS performance required: 1200 on SAT, 3.5 cumulative GPA SCUGP, top 6% of class end of 10th or 11th grade; alternative performance measures are available

Level 2: Up to $20,000 toward four-year bachelor’s degree (LIFE Scholarship) (some STEM majors may qualify for up to $27,500)

HS performance required: two of the following - 1100 on SAT, 3.0 cumulative GPA SCUGP, top 30% of senior class

Level 3: Up to $8,000 (approximate – actually full tuition plus $300 for books each year) toward two-year associate’s degree (LIFE Scholarship)

HS performance required: 3.0 cumulative GPA SCUGP

Level 4: Up to $5,600 toward four-year bachelor’s degree (HOPE Scholarship)

HS performance required: 3.0 cumulative GPA SCUGP

In addition to the academic requirements summarized above, you must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident; never convicted of a felony; and no more than one conviction for an alcohol or drug-related misdemeanor. Full requirements are explained at the SC Commission on Higher Education.
